Debating for Better Reasoning: An Unsupervised Multimodal Approach

Adhikari, Ashutosh, Lapata, Mirella

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

As Large Language Models (LLMs) gain expertise across diverse domains and modalities, scalable oversight becomes increasingly challenging, particularly when their capabilities may surpass human evaluators. Debate has emerged as a promising mechanism for enabling such oversight. In this work, we extend the debate paradigm to a multimodal setting, exploring its potential for weaker models to supervise and enhance the performance of stronger models. We focus on visual question answering (VQA), where two "sighted" expert vision-language models debate an answer, while a "blind" (text-only) judge adjudicates based solely on the quality of the arguments. In our framework, the experts defend only answers aligned with their beliefs, thereby obviating the need for explicit role-playing and concentrating the debate on instances of expert disagreement. Experiments on several multimodal tasks demonstrate that the debate framework consistently outperforms individual expert models. Moreover, judgments from weaker LLMs can help instill reasoning capabilities in vision-language models through finetuning.

Memorization and Knowledge Injection in Gated LLMs

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Large Language Models (LLMs) currently struggle to sequentially add new memories and integrate new knowledge. These limitations contrast with the human ability to continuously learn from new experiences and acquire knowledge throughout life. Most existing approaches add memories either through large context windows or external memory buffers (e.g., Retrieval-Augmented Generation), and studies on knowledge injection rarely test scenarios resembling everyday life events. In this work, we introduce a continual learning framework, Memory Embedded in Gated LLMs (MEGa), which injects event memories directly into the weights of LLMs. Each memory is stored in a dedicated set of gated low-rank weights. During inference, a gating mechanism activates relevant memory weights by matching query embeddings to stored memory embeddings. This enables the model to both recall entire memories and answer related questions. On two datasets - fictional characters and Wikipedia events - MEGa outperforms baseline approaches in mitigating catastrophic forgetting. Our model draws inspiration from the complementary memory system of the human brain.

Duffy contrasts Biden-era 'drone fiasco' with Trump admin's 'radical transparency' after FAA announces testing

FOX News

Transportation Sec. Sean Duffy indicated the Trump administration is committed to "radical transparency." In a video message about the Federal Aviation Administration doing "drone-detection testing" in New Jersey, Transportation Sec. Sean Duffy indicated that the Trump administration is committed to "radical transparency," juxtaposing that approach with what he referred to as the Biden administration's "drone fiasco." The FAA noted in a post on its website last week that the testing is slated to occur "in Cape May, New Jersey, between April 14-25." "The FAA will operate several large drones and more than 100 commercial off-the-shelf drones during the two-week period. Testing will take place over the water and near the Cape May Ferry Terminal during the daytime on weekdays only. The public should not fly recreational drones near this area during the test period," the post stated.

Foreign nationals flying drones over US military sites raises 'espionage' concern: expert

FOX News

Federal officials face a looming threat of foreign nationals utilizing drones to surveil United States military bases after two recent arrests and a string of mysterious incursions suggest the country's airspace is ill-equipped to handle the rapidly evolving technology. In late 2024, the Department of Justice announced charges against Yinpiao Zhou, 39, for allegedly flying a drone over Vandenberg Space Force Base in California and taking photos of the facility. The Chinese-American citizen was detained as he attempted to board a China-bound flight and was charged with violation of national defense airspace and failure to register an aircraft. "Anyone operating a drone over a restricted space, like a military base, would be subject to prosecution," Ken Gray, a former FBI agent and military analyst, told Fox News Digital. "A foreign national operating [a drone] raises a concern about that person being involved in some type of espionage or intelligence gathering."

'A lot worse than expected': AI Pac-Man clones, reviewed

The Guardian

Microsoft and Google have each created models that can dream up virtual worlds, with significant limitations. And people have been using Grok, the gen-AI chatbot from Elon Musk's xAI, to make rudimentary clones of old arcade games. All you have to do is type "write me Pong" and AI (sort of) does the rest, albeit quite badly. On Feb 21, xAI employee Taylor Silveira claimed to have created an accurate version of 1980 coin-op Pac-Man using Grok 3, all the ghosts moving perfectly around their maze while Pac-Man chomps down dots, power pills and fruit. The takeaway is that AI can apparently write simple video games in seconds, so long as you have a good command of the software.

Some drones over US bases may have been conducting surveillance: NORTHCOM General

FOX News

US Air Force Gen. Gregory Guillot told a senate committee that last year there were 350 drone detections over 100 military installations last year. A senior U.S. Northern Command (NORTHCOM) official told members of the Senate that some of the 350 drones that flew over military installations and sensitive areas last year may have been conducting surveillance. U.S. Air Force Gen. Gregory Guillot, who is commander of NORTHCOM and North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), was questioned about the drones during a Senate Armed Services Committee Budget hearing on Thursday. Drones were spotted flying all over the country last year, though most notably in New Jersey. They were also flying over military installations, including Joint Base Langley, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and Vandenberg Space Force Base.

Trump reveals what New Jersey drones REALLY were as White House admits craft were conducting 'research'

Daily Mail - Science & tech

President Donald Trump has revealed the mysterious drones over New Jersey were'not the enemy' and had been authorized to conduct'research'. In the first press briefing of Trump's second administration, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had been authorized to fly the drones for'research and various other reasons'. Leavitt said many of the drones were also'hobbyists, recreational and private individuals that enjoy flying drones' and claims that'in time, it got worse due to curiosity.' She added information had come'directly from the president of the United States that was just shared with me in the Oval Office'. But the White House's vague explanation has raised even more questions, especially after the FAA - which investigated the sightings after receiving reports from'concerned citizens' - failed to previously mention the alleged research.

President Donald Trump shares update on drones seen flying over New Jersey

FOX News

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt shared a message from President Donald Trump on the source of drone sightings reported over New Jersey. The White House on Tuesday revealed that some of the drones seen flying over New Jersey and other parts of the country in November were authorized to be flown by the Federal Aviation Administration. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt shared an update "directly" from President Donald Trump that clarified the origin of the drones, which caused a national stir and captured headlines for weeks late last year. "After research and study, the drones that were flying over New Jersey in large numbers were authorized by the FAA for research and various other reasons," Leavitt said. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt holds her first news conference in the Brady Press Briefing Room at the White House on Jan. 28, 2025, in Washington, D.C.
